Why You Will Love This Easy Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse

  • Naturally sweetened with ripe bananas.
  • Vegan and gluten-free but still creamy and indulgent. People won’t believe it’s plant-based and made without any whipping/heavy cream!
  • Much simpler than other ‘regular’ mousse recipes! No electric mixer and no whisking is required, and no long list of ingredients!
  • No fancy technique required so you don’t have to worry whether you’ve gotten the perfect stiff peaks!
  • Only requires 3 ingredients!

Ingredients

  • Bananas: Provide natural sweetness and a creamy base for the mousse.
  • Chocolate hazelnut spread, or regular hazelnut butter (without chocolate)
    • Make my chocolate hazelnut butter with dates for a refined sugar-free version. But feel free to use store-bought versions like Nutella or any variation of hazelnut butter/hazelnut spread!
    • In a pinch, almond butter will also work although, of course, this will alter the taste. Peanut butter can also work if you love that peanut-y taste.
  • Cacao powder: Gives the mousse a rich chocolatey taste.
    • Feel free to sub with cocoa powder.
  • Chopped hazelnuts (optional): As garnish.
  • Vegan whipped cream (optional): Feel free to use vegan yogurt for a healthier alternative, similar to the toppings in my banana chocolate mousse.

Step-by-step Instructions

Blend all ingredients until smooth, for about 30-60 seconds.

Transfer the chocolate mixture into serving glasses and chill in the fridge for at least 45 minutes to set.

Garnish with whipped cream (or yogurt) and hazelnuts if desired. Enjoy your chocolate hazelnut mousse!

Top Tips

  • Chill the mousse well for at least 45 minutes or longer if you prefer a firmer texture.
  • Blend thoroughly to ensure a super-smooth texture; a high-powered blender works best. If you don’t have a small blender like a Nutribullet, double or triple the recipe.
  • Add toppings for more indulgence! I kept the recipe basic to make it accessible, but get creative with the toppings (examples listed below)!

Jazzing Up Your Hazelnut Mousse

Don’t get me wrong, this hazelnut chocolate mousse is already great as is. But if you’re serving this for special guests and want to take it up a notch, here’s what I’d recommend.

  • Shaved dark chocolate or cacao nibs for extra richness.
  • Melted Nutella drizzle. Simply microwave for about 30 seconds until runny, then drizzle drizzle!
  • Fresh berries or berries compote.
  • Orange zest, similar to my orange chocolate mousse recipe.
  • A sprinkle of sea salt to bring out the chocolate flavors.
  • Edible flowers if you have access.
  • Make a full chocolate mousse tart out of it!

Storage and Meal Prep Instructions

Storage and Meal Prep: Keep the Nutella chocolate mousse in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days for the best texture and freshness.

Freezing: Freezing changes the texture of this Nutella mousse so please refrain from doing so.

FAQ

No, cacao is less processed and slightly more bitter, but you can use either. If you’re curious to learn the difference, check out this WebMD article.

It might need more blending for airiness, or extra chilling time to set the texture.

Chocolate pudding is usually thicker and creamier, while mousse has a lighter, airy texture from whipped ingredients or extra blending. The main ingredients that go into them also differ.

Hazelnut’s rich, nutty flavor complements chocolate’s sweetness and bitterness, creating a balanced taste that’s often compared to classic Nutella!

And in case you’re curious about the history of Nutella, it is actually because adding hazelnuts made things cheaper back then (more on this in this Huffpost article)!
