Nutella banana smoothie with a metal straw, with banana on the left and Nutella banana milkshake on the right.
This 5-minute Nutella banana smoothie is so creamy that it's like a healthy banana Nutella milkshake without ice cream! So refreshing and unbelievably rich!

Total Time 5 minutes
Serving Size 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 1 banana sliced and frozen
  • ½ Tablespoon nutella
  • cup plant-based milk (80 ml) I used oat milk but any kind will do
  • ½ to 1 tsp cacao powder I used 1 teaspoon but feel free to start with 1/2 teaspoon first, adding more if you'd like a more chocolatey flavor

Instructions

  • If your banana is NOT frozen, first slice your banana and transfer them into a Ziploc bag. Place a maximum of 2 bananas in the same bag so they won't stick together too much. You can also use reusable silicone bags or any other reusable food wraps.
Freeze for at least 2 hours.
  • Now add your frozen banana slices into a high-powered blender.
If they stick together, let them sit on the counter for 10-15 minutes until you can separate them easily, either by hand or using a spoon or a butter knife.
  • Add the remaining ingredients into the blender, then blend on high until everything is mixed together and there are no more lumps. This will take anywhere from 15 seconds (if you're using something like a Nutribullet) up to 1 minute.
  • Taste it and see if you'd like to add more cacao powder. More cacao powder will make your smoothie less sweet, but it will be more chocolatey.
  • Transfer to a glass to drink like how you would drink a milkshake, or into a bowl for a smoothie bowl. Add your toppings of choice, if desired (see post above for tasty options). Enjoy!

Notes

Top Tips
  • Frozen Bananas - You NEED to use frozen bananas. Otherwise, you won't get a creamy texture. So please don't skip it.
  • Ripe Bananas - The spottier, the better. That's when they're at their sweetest.
  • Be sure that each Ziploc bag has a maximum of 2 bananas in it. If you have too many bananas, it will be harder to separate them.
    • The other option is to flash-freeze your banana slices first, which takes more time but you can then put more bananas into the same bag.
    • To flash-freeze, line the banana slices on a baking sheet and pop them into the freezer for 1-2 hours. Then you can transfer them into a Ziploc bag and they won't stick to each other.
