3-ingredient banana spring rolls, perfect as dessert! Inspired by Filipino turon, these easy, no-oil, sweet dessert spring rolls are simple and delicious!

Drizzling agave syrup onto a plate of banana spring rolls served with vegan vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • Bananas: Sweet and creamy; it’s the star of this banana roll!
  • Jackfruit (optional): If you’d like to make Filipino turon (banana lumpia), this one is what you need! But feel free to skip if it’s hard to find!
    • Be sure to use ripe jackfruit since unripe jackfruit (the one people often use as a meat substitute, like in my mum’s jackfruit rendang recipe) has a very different flavor profile.
  • Spring roll wrappers: Most brands are vegan but double-check just to be sure since they sometimes contain milk powder and/or egg!
  • Cinnamon: Packs a bunch of antioxidants!
Spring roll wrappers, banana, ripe jackfruit, ice cream, cinnamon, and agave syrup with labels.

And some topping for you to serve this with

  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)
    • Or go all out by using pineapple and coconut ice cream to make this similar to PF Chang’s banana spring rolls.
  • Maple/agave syrup or caramel sauce (optional)

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Lay out a spring roll wrapper in a diamond shape.
  2. Sprinkle cinnamon in the centre.
  3. Coat a banana strip with cinnamon and place it in the middle. Then top with jackfruit, if using.
  4. Fold the sides in, then roll it up tightly. Use your finger to smear the top part with a bit more cinnamon to give the spring rolls a bit more color.
  1. Air fry at 200°C (390°F) for 12 minutes, or pan fry until golden.
  2. Serve these sweet spring rolls as is or with ice cream and maple syrup/caramel sauce for extra sweetness.

Top Tips

  • Serve immediately: These spring rolls are best enjoyed hot and crispy, straight from the fryer!
  • Experiment with the toppings!
    • Feel free to coat the banana in some brown sugar to make it closer to Filipino turon (banana lumpia), or try adding some vegan chocolate spread/Nutella or melted chocolate chips!
    • You might also want to sprinkle some coconut flakes, or try drizzling them with my honey lavender syrup!
    • Top with fresh strawberries or other fruits if this sounds good to you!

These banana spring rolls are a great party food! They pair well with my sweet sushi recipes: mango avocado roll or peanut avocado roll.

Or if you’d like savory sushi, try my asparagus sushi, cucumber roll, inari (bean curd) roll, shiitake mushroom sushi, or kimchi sushi!

And since a party isn’t complete with drinks, try serving them with my mango matcha latte, iced lavender matcha latte, or Korean strawberry milk!

Storage and Meal Prep Instructions

Storage: Store leftover banana spring rolls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in an air fryer for about 3 minutes at 200°C (390°F) to regain crispiness.

Meal Prep: Prep the dessert spring rolls ahead of time and keep them uncooked in the fridge, then fry them fresh when ready to serve.

Freezing: Freeze uncooked spring rolls on a tray, then transfer to a bag for up to 1 month. Fry directly from frozen, adding 2-4 minutes to the cooking time.

Speaking of lumpia, that’s also what we call spring rolls in Indonesian! The old spelling is “loempia”, and this dish is very popular too here in the Netherlands since Indonesia used to be a colony.

No, spring rolls can be served uncooked (like Vietnamese spring rolls), deep-fried, air-fried, or even baked.

Vietnamese spring rolls are often served fresh, with fillings like herbs, rice noodles, and shrimp, wrapped in ricfilipe paper, while other spring rolls are typically fried and are wrapped with spring roll wrappers.

Notes

  • You want ripe jackfruit which looks bright yellow in color and tastes sweet. This is different from unripe jackfruit, which looks beige in color and is not sweet at all. Please see my jackfruit rendang to see a picture of unripe jackfruit.
