Orange chocolate mousse made with 3 ingredients to keep things easy and healthy-ish, but with the option to jazz it up with more toppings to make it festive! No special equipment needed, making this a super easy chocolate mousse recipe!
Why You Will Love This Orange Chocolate Mousse
Ingredients and Substitutions
Technically, you only need 2 ingredients to make this chocolate orange mousse: chocolate and orange. But let me explain why I added more ingredients!
- Dark chocolate chips: Adds a rich, deep chocolate flavor to the mousse. I used 70% dark chocolate but other types of chocolate chips should also work.
- Orange juice: Provides a fresh, citrusy zing that complements the chocolate.
- Use freshly squeezed orange juice to get the most nutritional benefits. You can try using store-bought orange juice that is 100% made of oranges.
- Note that I have not tried this orange mousse with regular orange juice (which usually contains additional sugars and other additives).
- Vanilla extract: Adds that gourmet flavor to your mousse.
And four optional ingredients to enhance the taste and as garnish.
- Agave syrup: In case your orange juice is a bit too sour. Feel free to use any other liquid sweetener (like maple syrup) or even regular granulated sugar or powdered sugar.
- Vegan yogurt, crushed nuts, and orange zest: For garnish, so they are not included in the ingredients photo above.
- Thicker yogurt like Greek yogurt variations or vegan quark works best.
- I used almonds but other nuts will also work
- Feel free to skip if making this 3-ingredient chocolate mousse for day-to-day consumption, but I highly recommend using them for special celebrations.
Step-by-step Instructions
In a large bowl, melt the dark chocolate chips using a double boiler. If you are unfamiliar, refer to this article by The Mom 100 on how to do so.
Blend the orange juice until it doubles in volume, making it light and airy.
Gradually pour the melted chocolate and vanilla extract into the aerated orange juice. Then blend further for 1-2 minutes. You want a very smooth mixture without any visible grains, similar to a chocolate milk.
Taste test and sweeten with agave syrup if needed, then give it a quick final blend.
Chill the mousse in the fridge for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight.
Garnish with the vegan yogurt, nuts, and orange zest. Enjoy your delicious orange chocolate mousse!
Top Tips
- Make sure that you blend long enough that there are no visible grains. Overblending is better than underblending in this case.
- Your melted chocolate is likely to firm up a little bit when you mix them with the orange juice. So when you start blending, this will break the chocolate up into tiny solid chocolate grains.
- But if you blend longer, then these tiny chocolate grains will melt and you will end up with a smooth consistency similar to that of a chocolate milk. Otherwise, your mousse might turn out grainy.
- The mousse sets better the longer it chills, so if you can, let it chill overnight in the fridge.
Serving Suggestions
My recommended way to serve this is with some yogurt, sprinkled with crushed nuts (like almonds, walnuts, or pistachios) and orange zest. However, you can also use vegan whipped cream, shaved chocolate, and even flaked sea salt!
If you want to make a more filling dessert, turn them into orange chocolate mousse tart!
Storage and Make Ahead Instructions
This chocolate orange mousse is perfect to make ahead! Make this the day earlier to let the mousse sets nicely.
Leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days, when you seal the top with a cling wrap.

Instructions
- Melt your dark chocolate chips using a double boiler. If you are unfamiliar with a double boiler, simply boil water in a small saucepan, reducing it to a low simmer once the water has reached boiling point. Then put a large heat-proof bowl on top of the saucepan. The bottom of the bowl should fully cover the saucepan, and it should NOT touch the water. Add the chocolate chips into the bowl. The steam from the saucepan will melt the chocolate chips. See notes for more info.1/4 cup (45 grams) dark chocolate chips

Notes
- For more detailed information of a double-boiler, refer to this article by The Mom 100.
- I usually just melt my chocolate chips in the microwave but this recipe is quite delicate and you easily risk burning or seizing the chocolate this way. So please refrain from microwaving and use a double boiler. A double boiler might sound complicated but it really isn’t!
- If you want a simple and fail-proof mousse recipe, try my banana chocolate mousse or my hazelnut chocolate mousse. You can top them off with orange zest to still get the orange flavor!
