Ingredients and Substitutions

Only three ingredients needed!

  • Bananas: Sweet and creamy, this is what creates that dreamy mousse texture!
  • Dark chocolate chips: Feel free to sub with your favorite dark chocolate bar, chopped into smaller pieces.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds an exquisite bitterness for a richer depth in your mousse! This banana chocolate mousse already works without vanilla extract but it’s worth a trip to the grocery store if you don’t already have it at home!

And two optional ingredients for the garnish: yogurt and shaved chocolate! Note that they are not included in the ingredients photo above.

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Melt your chocolate chips either using a double boiler, or using a microwave on low power. Start with 30 seconds, stir, then continue to melt in 15-second increments, stirring in between.
  2. Blend all ingredients in a small high-powered blender until smooth, about 30-60 seconds.
  3. Chill the mixture in serving glasses for at least 45 minutes to firm up into a mousse-like texture.
  4. (Optional) Just before serving, spoon 1 heaping Tablespoon of yogurt on top, then top with more sliced banana and shaved chocolate. Enjoy your chocolate banana mousse!

Top Tips

  • Use bananas that are just starting to form brown spots – they should be sweet enough without an overpowering banana flavor.
    • Try to use bananas that are not as ripe as the ones you would use for banana bread. Unless of course, you love the banana flavor!
  • No small blender? Simply double or triple the recipe if you’re using a bigger blender, and you can store leftovers for up to 3 days!
    • You can also use a food processor if that’s what you have.

Serving Suggestions

Try piping your chocolate mousse using a piping bag for the ultimate gourmet experience! You can also add fresh berries or berries compote on top for a tangy contrast, top with chopped nuts for some crunch (similar to my hazelnut chocolate mousse which uses my chocolate spread), or add some orange zest and juice (similar to my chocolate orange mousse).

You might also want to top with some coconut whipped cream, coconut flakes, or even mint leaves. And if you’re feeling indulgent, make some chocolate mousse mini tarts from this!

Storage and Meal Prep Instructions

Storage: Keep any leftover mousse in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Meal Prep: You can make the mousse a day ahead, allowing the flavors to deepen as it chills!

Freezing: Do NOT freeze your chocolate mousse since the texture will change, and mousse is all about its creamy and airy texture.

FAQ

Not quite! While pudding is typically cooked and thickened with cornstarch or a similar ingredient, mousse gets its fluffy texture from air whipped into it (like blending or folding), which gives it a lighter, airy consistency. Mousse doesn’t usually contain cornstarch or other thickening ingredients.

Bananas have a natural sweetness and creaminess that complements the rich, slightly bitter taste of chocolate!

Mousse is commonly known as mousse in the U.S. too! It’s a popular dessert, often in chocolate or fruit varieties.

If your mousse isn’t setting, it may just need a bit more chill time in the fridge. Also make sure that you blend this three-ingredient chocolate mousse long enough so that it gets fluffy.

Serving Size 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 medium ripe bananas more for optional toppings; please see notes below
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Garnish (optional)

  • 1 Tablespoon (vegan) yogurt Greek yogurt variation works best, but any yogurt works
  • shaved chocolate

Instructions

  • Melt your dark chocolate chips in a small bowl in the microwave. Use a low power and start by microwaving for 30 seconds. Stir, then microwave in 15-second increments, stirring in between.
Be sure to use a low power so that you don't burn your chocolate.
    1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • Blend all the ingredients in a small high-powered blender until very smooth, for about 30 to 90 seconds. If you only have a bigger blender, simply double or triple the recipe.
2 medium ripe bananas, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • Transfer into 2 (or more) serving glasses. Set in the fridge for at least 45 minutes until the mixture sets. The texture should then be more firm and become more mousse-like, instead of being quite runny right out of the blender.
  • (Optional) Scoop a heaping Tablespoon of your yogurt, then place on top of the mousse. Add a few banana slices if you would like, then sprinkle some shaved chocolate on top. Enjoy!
1 Tablespoon (vegan) yogurt, shaved chocolate, 2 medium ripe bananas

Notes

  • You want ripe bananas that are just starting to get spotty. So refrain from using bananas that are very spotty (like the ones you would use in banana bread) since the banana taste can be overpowering.
    • However, if you don’t mind the banana taste, then feel free to use very ripe bananas!
